“I Might Be Off On This…But I’ll Probably Still Be On Earth:” A TDQ Q&A With Actress And Comedian Rory Uphold

Rory Uphold

Rory Uphold is writer/producer/actor of HelLA. We have the utmost respect for writer/producer/actors of pieces with very specific lettering. After you finish watching all of HelLA find a little masterpiece called RECOiL on the ‘tube.

This week’s TDQ Q&A is with actress and comedian Rory Uphold. Rory spoke to us about the new season of her internet series, “HelLA,” her other internet series “This is Why We’re Single” and her encyclopedic knowledge of hair. Here is this week’s TDQ Q&A with Rory Uphold:

The Daily Quarterly: What made you want to be in show business?

Rory Uphold: The show part, not the business part. I’ve always loved make-believe and I’ve always been a storyteller.

TDQ: Who was your favorite comedian growing up?

RU: Janeane Garofalo. Steve Martin. John Candy

TDQ: What was your favorite TV show growing up?

RU: Well, I didn’t really watch TV… I know I liked “Sesame Street” and Mr. Rogers. And I sort of remember watching the “Gilmore Girls” and SNL. I do know that I had a VHS copy of a live production of “Into The Woods,” with Bernadette Peters, that I used to watch over and over again.

Rory says she hardly watched TV as a kid but now she is making it. It sounds crazy until you realize that Steve Jobs didn't have a computer as a kid but that didn't stop him. Heck, we didn't have a website as kids but look at us! In short, follow your dreams.

TDQ: What is the best advice you have ever gotten?

RU: Always wear clean underwear.

TDQ: What is the worst advice you have ever gotten?

RU: Hair grows… yeah, it does. Slowly.

TDQ: Who are your influences?

RU: My friends. Real life.

TDQ: Tell us about the upcoming second season of your web series, “HelLA”

RU: Well, it came out January 19th at www.OnlyinHelLA.com and I’m pretty pumped to share it. We have self-tanning accidents, stoner moments, dating disasters, and more! I’m grateful to my Kickstarter backers for making this possible.

TDQ: Besides acting, you’re also a singer/songwriter. What’s more challenging, finishing an album, or finishing a season of a TV show?

RU: A TV show. TV. Because, potentially, you can make an album alone, but you cannot make TV alone. That said, I’ve never made a season of television, so I can’t say for sure.

Rory's other fun funny show on the Elite Daily channel is This is Why We're Single.

TDQ: After wrapping up season 2 of “HelLA,” what project is next for you?

RU: I make another digital show called “This Is Why We’re Single” for Elite Daily, so I’ll be making more of that… and I have a couple of TV projects in the works but it’s really too soon to talk about those.

TDQ: Where do you see yourself in five years?

RU: I have really bad vision, that’s why I wear glasses, so I might be off on this… but I’ll probably still be on earth Fingers crossed :)
