This week’s TDQ Q&A features actress and dancer Valery Ortiz. Valery spoke with us about her new show on VH1, “Hit the Floor,” how much her family has influenced her and how we reminded her of high school. Here is this week’s TDQ Q&A with Valery Ortiz:
The Daily Quarterly: What made you want to be in show business?
Valery Ortiz: My brother Hector had a lot to do with my love for show business! He used our home video camera to direct us both (and any family and friends interested) in mini movies, music videos, stop motion animation (with my ‘Grape Escape Game’ play-dough), just about everything! That’s what we did for fun growing up so I always had a pure love for it.
TDQ: What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten?
VO: A very wise man (Papi!) has always told me you can’t trust everyone. Unfortunately he’s right. But I thank him SO much for that. It sounds weird but I feel strong because of it.
TDQ: What’s the worst advice you’ve ever gotten?
VO: To quit my first big hosting gig and go back to school (college). Now, as difficult as it was to ignore that, had I taken this advice, I would have never taken the road trip to Cali that essentially caused my permanent move and started my career! Whew!
TDQ: Who are your influences?
VO: My family! My parents specifically influence me every day. They’ve worked so hard to allow my brother and I to fulfill our dreams. There’s no way I’d be where I am today without their love, motivation and influence. No way.
TDQ: What can you tell us about your new role on VH1’s “Hit the Floor?”
VO: I play Raquel Saldana. She’s a veteran Devil Girl dancer who thinks with her heart and makes sense of things after the fact. I have a 4 year-old son named Miguel by the agent to several basketball players on the LA Devils basketball team. Lets just say a lot of Raquel’s problems start there! Lol
TDQ: What advice would you give to a young aspiring actress/dancer?
VO: Aw man! I’d say if I’ve made it this far, YOU can too! Stay driven, keep busy, surround yourself with positive, like-minded individuals and go get ’em!!!!
TDQ: Where do you see yourself in five years?
VO: Wow! *Instant flashback to High School when they asked us where we saw ourselves in 10 years*
This question is different as an adult because you realize how hard it is to actually plan and how different things turn out even when you do! But, ideally, I will still be in California working on VH1’s SMASHING SENSATION “Hit the Floor” and doing big feature films between seasons. I’m a big dreamer so I’ll have my 2-door convertible, new house, endorsement deals, magazine covers and I’ll be working on a few projects with my brother Hector and cousin Jennifer. I also want to have said that I’ve traveled to dream destinations with my husband and I’d love to start thinking (don’t get too excited lol) about starting a family. And IDEALLY, IDEALLY have my parents here with me during all of those new adventures.
