Trenton, NJ—Usually the only things a best man has to worry about are throwing the bachelor party for the groom and getting him to the ceremony on time. But one Trenton man went above and beyond by donating one of his packets of mayonnaise to the bride during a recent visit to Burger King.
Glenna Benson, 27, had been a huge fan of mayonnaise for as long as she could remember, despite often struggling to find it next to the standard fare of ketchup and mustard in condiment displays. But thanks to her new husband’s best friend, Darren Schleiter, she didn’t have to go without during lunch last week, and possible ruin the whole afternoon for herself and her companions.
“I feel normal again,” she said. “I have got a lot to thank Darren for.”
Schleiter served as best man when Glenna married Shawn Benson in The Pokinos last year. He was able to grab the last packet of mayonnaise last Thursday while eating lunch with his wife and the Bensons “before some annoying teenager grabbed it,” and he happily offered it to Glenna after confirming “with the jack-ass restaurant manager that they were out.”
Although he suffered to finish and digest a dry chicken sandwich after handing the packet to her and had to battle off a very annoying coughing fit, he said has no regrets. “It’s hard to describe, but it’s a fantastic feeling,” he said. “I’ve seen Glenna when she doesn’t get herself some mayonnaise, and she looks ten years younger now, knowing she had access to it. To see how she looks is unbelievable.”
Darren’s wife added, “It’s an outstanding gift that he’s given. I’m really proud of him. Not everybody would have done that.”
As for Shawn, he’s overwhelmed by his best friend’s kindness, saying, “I can’t express in words what he has done for us. How can you repay someone for doing that for your wife? He’s my hero, no doubt. No doubt.”
After she finished her meal, Glenna said she hopes to further her studies and eventually start a family.
